CEP 820 Reflection

My reflection on my online course starts off with being excited from beginning to end. This course is probably the one of the best courses of my MAET program.  One of the most important things i wanted for my course was to try and simulate a face to face course as much as possible. I wanted to allow for a much communication as possible between student/teacher and student/student. So the idea of synchronous communication was vital. Another idea was that this course would not solely be an online course, but a hybrid. I wanted to be able to have physical contact with my students that were local, while still being able to let my online students feel apart as much as possible.

When I designed my course, the main focus was, what do I want my course to look like. To be honest, I still do not think I have figured it out yet. I designed the course based on course I plan on teaching one day, in which now that I think about it, it was probably also my biggest mistake. Here is why, the course was created with material I wanted to teacher, and not sure if it’s what needed to be taught, or at least some areas focused on others. I never sat and planned out what should be in the unit. By the time I got the material, i was so excited I kept thinking of other material to add that would should also be learned.  As I sit and reflect at this very moment,I would go back and change my course. It would be an Intro Game Design course that I have actually taught in the past. See what happend was, I got so caught up in and excited to create an online course for something i plan on using in the future, now that it’s over, I am not so proud of the outcome. I found myself asking what could I have did differently and still not knowing what went wrong. I believe that if i would have created an online module that I had experience teaching my final product would have, to me turned out successful. What I mean by successful is, that the flow would have went better, and transitioning from unit to unit would have been smoother. The learning material would have been more interactive and the the course probably would have been designed more with a Flipped Classroom in mind. But hey you live and you learn is what they say. They also say hindsight is 20/20, and clearly all makes sense now. What this course did do was give me the opportunity to have a first hand instructed experience and knowledge of LMSs that I can now transfer over and hone my online teaching skills.
